Born and raised in Haiti, Frenal Mezilas has been passionate about art since the age of 10. Despite his parents’ limited knowledge of the field, they never discouraged him from pursuing his passion. His father, a local tailor who made school uniforms for neighborhood children, once witnessed an incident that could have changed Frenal’s creative path forever. One day, Frenal accidentally spilled paint over his father’s carefully tailored fabrics. In fear of his reaction, he hid at a neighbor’s house. However, his father’s understanding response encouraged him to keep painting, nurturing his artistic talent.
As Frenal’s reputation as a young artist grew, people began commissioning him for portraits. His classmates would pay him for drawings, and he used that money to buy paints and canvases, setting the stage for his future career. He spent countless hours perfecting his technique, drawing faces and landscapes on the streets, and embracing a love for abstract art and vibrant colors.
At the age of 16, Frenal began his first job as a painter at a factory that produced sculptures and papier-mâché crafts for export. His commitment to his art was evident—he would bike 20 miles each day to the factory, working from 7 a.m. until noon before heading to school. By 8 p.m., when he finally returned home, he would often continue working on sculptures over the weekend to meet his quota and secure his earnings. Within three years, he became a supervisor, a position he held for seven years before pursuing his dream of higher education.
Haiti’s sole fine arts university initially denied him admission due to a late application. However, after presenting one of his paintings, the school accepted him. Throughout high school, Frenal won several art awards, which helped secure his place in the competitive college program. His perseverance paid off, but in 2010, the devastating earthquake in Haiti destroyed many of his artworks. Realizing that opportunities in Haiti were limited, Frenal obtained a visa with the help of his brother and moved to America.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree, Frenal expanded his artistic horizons by traveling to Mexico, where he studied the rich tradition of Mexican craftsmanship and further honed his mixed media techniques. His distinctive style, characterized by three-dimensional ceramics and surrealist elements, began to take shape. By combining surrealism with realism and cubism, Frenal developed an unmistakable artistic voice.
In 2011, Frenal Mezilas moved to Long Island, New York, where he connected with the local art community. He exhibited his work at libraries and Hofstra University and secured a teaching position at Creative Art Space in Lynbrook. For the next eight years, he shared his love for art with students of all ages, finding fulfillment in the creative process.
After obtaining his U.S. citizenship in 2013, Frenal married in 2014, and welcomed a son. He then sought more stable employment and landed a position at Walmart, where he eventually became a manager. In 2017, Frenal transitioned to a role that aligned more closely with his passion for art and helping others. He began teaching art to people with developmental disabilities at Adults and Children with Learning & Developmental Disabilities (ACLD) in Bethpage. This job brought him immense joy as he developed adaptive techniques, such as using sponges for students who couldn’t hold a paintbrush or guiding blind students in creating tactile sculptures.
Today, Frenal continues to inspire others through his work and teaching, striving to break barriers and open doors for aspiring artists. He dreams of owning a large studio where he can create and teach full-time. His goal is to exhibit his artwork globally and leave a legacy of creativity and hope that transcends generations. He is proud to launch his website where anyone can browse his wide-ranging selection of original paintings and sculptures. www.frenalmezilasarts.com
